4. What Is Agafay Like?

Agafay offers the easiest desert-style escape from Marrakech. Its proximity means you do not need to commit several days of your itinerary to reaching southern Morocco.

The landscape is dry, open and rocky, with rolling mineral terrain rather than Erg Chebbi-style sand dunes. On clear days, the wider setting can also include impressive views toward the Atlas Mountains.

Agafay works particularly well for travelers who want an outdoor experience, sunset, meal, camp atmosphere or activities near Marrakech but do not have enough time for a multi-day Sahara route.

Merzouga normally deserves at least three days when traveling from Marrakech. Even then, the itinerary contains significant road travel. Four or five days creates more room for stops and a slower journey.

Zagora can fit into a two-day journey from Marrakech, which makes it practical for travelers who want to cross the Atlas and experience southern Morocco but cannot dedicate three or more days to Merzouga.
